Back on Broadway for the first time in decades, West Side Story is the classic re-telling of a love story. With songs that have endured for years and with a story that is current and classic at the same time, West Side Story Broadway delivers a powerful and exciting message. Originally conceived by Jerome Robbins, Leonard Bernstein and Arthur Laurents, this is the urban musical version of William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet.
When first developed, the story was to be about a star-crossed romance between Jewish boy and an Italian Catholic girl and was named ‘East Side Story’. After being on hold for ½ dozen years, the main characters switched nationalities. Instead, they wrote the story of a native-born Polish boy and a Puerto Rican girl newly arrived in America--and set it against the backdrop of clashing street gangs on NYC’s west side. West Side Story Broadway remains true to its Shakespearean model. At first things look good for the young lovers, but when Tony (like Romeo) accidentally kills his lover's brother while trying to break up a rumble, the smoldering undercurrent of violence erupts. The music is a fresh today as it ever was with a set of tunes that all ages enjoy - standards that includes "Tonight," "America," "Maria," "I Feel Pretty" and "Somewhere".
